Improve finning - helicopter turn
Understanding the Helicopter Turn
The helicopter turn is a specialized diving technique that evolved from the frog kick. It provides precise rotational control around a fixed point, making it invaluable for underwater activities that require stable positioning.
Applications
- Underwater photography and videography
- Cave and wreck penetration diving
- Reef diving for detailed observation
- Any situation requiring controlled rotation in confined spaces
Execution Technique
Basic Two-Leg Movement
- Begin by bending both knees to approximately 90 degrees
- Open one thigh outward to roughly 30 degrees
- Tilt both ankles inward
- Close your thighs as your feet come together
- Tilt the opposite ankle in the same direction
- Open the second thigh to maintain the rotational motion
Simplified Single-Leg Variation
- For clockwise rotation: Use your right leg
- For counter-clockwise rotation: Use your left leg
Key Tips
- Start with slow, controlled movements
- Maintain your body position and trim
- Practice in open water before attempting in confined spaces
- Use minimal force to achieve the desired rotation speed
This specialized kick provides excellent control and efficiency, making it an essential skill for technical and recreational divers alike.
