Improve finning - frog kick
The Frog Kick: Essential Underwater Propulsion
Overview
The frog kick is a fundamental diving technique that provides exceptional underwater control. Similar to the breaststroke swimming technique, it’s adapted for scuba diving to maximize fin efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
Key Benefits
- Precise directional control (forward, backward, and rotational movement)
- Minimal environmental impact on delicate underwater environments
- Enhanced buoyancy control
- Reduced bottom disturbance in sensitive areas:
- Sandy bottoms
- Silty environments
- Coral reefs
- Shipwreck sites
Execution Technique
Power Phase
- Bend knees to approximately 90 degrees
- Open thighs to roughly 45 degrees
- Rotate feet outward (duck-foot position)
- Tilt ankles inward toward each other
- Close thighs while pushing legs outward
Recovery Phase
- Keep fins parallel to the bottom
- Minimize water resistance
- Focus on smooth, controlled movements
Optimization Tips
- Utilize a kick-and-glide pattern for maximum efficiency
- Maintain consistent rhythm
- Focus on form rather than speed
- Practice in open water before applying in sensitive areas
For former swimmers, think of this as a modified breaststroke kick, adapted specifically for the underwater environment and optimized for fin use.
